Bioassay Policy
During an inspection of the Radiation
Safety Program, the Illinois Department of Nuclear Safety (IDNS) noted that
many labs were using material in excess of 1 mCi on multiple days, but were not
having thyroid bioassays done after iodination procedures. It is
required that bioassays be performed within one week of each use of
material.
Users of I-125 and I-131 should be reminded that the bioassay requirement does not apply to stock vials purchased containing 1 mCi or less
· Iodine users will be issued a usage log for each iodine package ordered.
· Laboratories will be required to submit a copy of this usage log to the Office of Radiation Safety each week. This requirement remains in effect for the length of time the iodine stock vial(s) remain in your lab. Please Note: Our office recommends that your lab either fax (2-4008) or hand carry a copy to our office to ensure receipt.
· The usage form must list the date material was used, amount removed from vial, percent of activity placed into waste, and the users initials.
·
Vials that will no longer be used by the lab must be
transferred to the Office of Radiation Safety. Once the stock vial is no longer
in your possession, labs will no longer need to submit copies of their usage
log to our office.
