The University of Chicago has established an account with the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCINFO) Academic Support Program.  NOTE:  This database has been set up to only allow access from University of Chicago computers.  The CCINFO Academic Support Program provides access to the follows databases:

• MSDS/FTSS;
• CHEMINFO;
• RTECS;
• HSELINE; and
• NIOSHTIC with OSHLINE.

To access: 

1. Go to http://ccinfoweb.ccohs.ca/;
2. Choose MSDS* plus CHEMINFO from Web Collections
3. Type chemical name and click search;
4. Choose correct product and click blue link to open material safety data sheet; and
5. If you are prompted to enter a user name and password, then the computer in use is not in the IP range and/or domain name provided.

The MSDS/FTSS databases give you instant access to the most up-to-date (approximately 120,000) Material Safety Data
Sheets from 600 North American manufacturers and suppliers.

The MSDS database can be searched quickly and easily for product names, manufacturer or supplier , or by any term used in the MSDS.  Text is presented exactly as contributed by suppliers, who provide regular updates to keep this collection current.

The CHEMINFO database, written by Occupational Health and Safety professionals, provides over 1200 frequently used chemicals, providing comprehensive, practical, summarized occupational safety and health information including: 

• Detailed evaluations of health, fire and reactivity hazards;
• Handling and storage; 
• Personal protective equipment; 
• Accidental release; and
• First Aid.

More than 175,000 citations with abstracts of worldwide literature on occupational safety and health.  Coverage of all UK Health and Safety Commission and Health and Safety Executive publications as well as a wide range of periodicals, books, conference proceedings, reports, and legislation.  Predominantly oriented towards safety and industrial hazards, with an emphasis on:

• Engineering;
• Manufacturing;
• Agriculture;
• Mining;
• Hazardous substances;
• Occupational hygiene;
• Railways; and 
• Offshore safety.

Registry of Toxic Effects of Chemical Substances (RTECS) from NIOSH provides toxicological information with citations on over 130,000 chemical substances.  These detailed profiles include toxicological data and reviews; international workplace exposure limits; references to U.S. standards and regulations; analytical methods; and exposure and hazard survey data.  the data is compiled into substance records for ease-of-use, and updated data is fully intenerated.  Original coded NIOSH data is replaced by full text descriptions.

• 367,000 chemical names and synonyms, and 109,000 unique CAS numbers;
• Specific toxicity data such as LD₅₀, LC₅₀, tumorigenic and reproductive effects
• Carcinogenicity status by OSHA; IARC; NTP; ACGIH; EPA Genetox Program;

Over 100 years of published literature from the occupational safety and health field is referenced in this bibliographic database.  This unique resource provides detailed summaries of over 200,000 articles, reports and other key publications including:

• Difficult-to-obtain toxicology studies from pre-1960;
• Thousands of case reports on actual exposures, accidents and remediation efforts;
• Diverse subject coverage from indoor air quality to PPE to human health effects; and
• Hundreds of sources surveyed including 160 technical and scientific journals.
