  • More than one chemical has spilled;
  • The quantity spilled is more than the available absorbent provided in the Spill Control Station or the spill is greater than one liter;
  • The chemical is classified as a toxic or poison;
  • The chemical is highly flammable or explosive;
  • The substance is unknown or you are uncertain of the hazards of the substance;
  • A secondary emergency situation exists (e.g., fire); or
  • You are uncomfortable in the situation.

If you are UNABLE to deal with the release, adhere to the following steps.

Incident Notification

  1. Immediately upon discovery of an emergency incident related to the release of a hazardous material, notify the University of Chicago Police at extension 123 or 702-8181 to report the incident.
  2. Evacuate the area.
  3. The University Police shall immediately notify the "On-Call" Safety Officer.

Site Control

  1. The site shall be controlled and maintained by the University of Chicago Police Department and/or Chicago Police Department personnel.
  2. If the Police are not on site, the first arriving Safety Officer shall control access or appoint someone to control access until their arrival.
  3. No one will be allowed to enter the area unless authorized.

If you are ABLE to clean up the spill without assistance, adhere to the following steps.

If the chemical spilled is a liquid, respond as follows:

  1. Identify the chemical spilled to determine if you are capable of cleaning up the spill safely;
  2. Refer to the container label and/or Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS);
  3. Don the appropriate personal protective equipment before cleaning up the spill;
  4. Choose the proper neutralizing agent for the spill from the nearest Spill Control Station, if one is present;
  5. Apply neutralizer or absorbent material as follows:
    1. Encircle the chemical spill with neutralizing or absorbing material;
    2. Once spill has been encircled, apply neutralizing or absorbing material to center of spill;
    3. If it is a caustic or acid spill, read neutralizing container to determine the correct contact time for material to be neutralized;
    4. Once spill has been neutralized, vermiculite or general absorbent can be added to absorb remaining spilled material; and
    5. Sweep/shovel up spilled material and ensure area is completely neutralized by using pH paper (for caustic and acid spills only) located within the Spill Control Station.
  1. Dispose all materials (e.g., gloves, brooms, paper towels) used to clean up the spill inside a sealed, leak proof bag or container (e.g., zip lock bag, taped plastic bag);
  2. Label and dispose of all bags or containers as hazardous waste;
  3. Complete the spill documentation form inside the spill control station and return to Environmental Health and Safety to ensure spill control stations are replenished; and
  4. Contact Environmental Health and Safety at 702-9999 for a hazardous waste collection and ABM at 702-0260 for general cleaning of area.

If chemical spilled is a powder, respond as follows:

  1. Identify the chemical spilled to determine if you are capable of cleaning up the spill safely;
  2. Refer to the container label and/or Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS);
  3. Don the appropriate personal protective equipment before cleaning up the spill;
  4. Sweep up spilled material carefully to prevent generation of dust;
  5. Place in a sealed container (e.g., zip lock bag, taped plastic bag) and label container with its contents.
  6. Dispose all materials (e.g., gloves, brooms, paper towels) used to clean up the spill inside a sealed, leak proof bag or container (e.g., zip lock bag, taped plastic bag);
  7. Label and dispose of all bags or containers as hazardous waste;
  8. Complete the spill documentation form inside the spill control station and return to Environmental Health and Safety to ensure spill control stations are replenished; and
  9. Contact Environmental Health and Safety at 702-9999 for a hazardous waste collection and ABM at 702-0260 for general cleaning of area.
